All gratitude to God for creating the beautiful earth we call home! The abundance we currently enjoy is reflected in many diverse ways. From the vastness of the sky in all its glory, to the contents of the landmass and water bodies we live on, to the depths of the earth from which emanates all manner of resources we need for optimum wellbeing, the richness of mother earth cannot be overstated. Have you ever stayed still to look around and just take in nature’s beauty? There is a certain peace, tranquility and joy that comes with it.
Do you know there are still uninhabited portions of the earth?
We discover new and amazing things about our planet and how it works every single day. There are many life forms on the earth but, only man due to his higher cognitive power, has been given the mandate to be her custodian. It is only right therefore that we show ourselves to be responsible and take proper care of the place we inhabit.
It is prudent that we reflect on the necessary interdependence existing between human beings, other living species, and our planet, and why it is essential to promote harmony between ourselves and the ecosystems that provide us with life and sustenance for the years to come. Protecting the earth should be your business, and not just the responsibility of governments and agencies. We must show personal responsibility in our little corners.
The basic way we show our care and concern for what has been given us, is to be disciplined enough to do the right things in every place we find ourselves. We must show proactiveness by preventing further deterioration of an earth which has undergone so much negative change already. We must heed mother earth’s glaring warning in various happenings such as the increased prevalence of natural disasters like floods and hurricanes, the springing up of new zoonotic diseases and its impact on human health, and the well-spoken about climate change.
It is estimated that around one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction!!!!!
If we keep going on with life as we currently do, the earth’s temperatures would rise to alarming levels with far more serious consequences. The projections by the authorising bodies should the global temperatures rise include;
- Insects, vital for pollination of crops and plants, are likely to lose half their habitat at 1.5°C but this becomes almost twice as likely at 2°C.
- The Arctic Ocean being completely bare of sea ice in summer, would be a once per century likelihood at 1.5°C, but this leaps to a once a decade likelihood at 2°C.
- Over 6 million people currently living in coastal areas are vulnerable to a sea level rise at 1.5°C degrees, and at 2°C this would affect 10 million more people by the end of this century.
- Sea-level rise will be 100 centimeters higher at 2°C than at 1.5°C.
- The frequency and intensity of droughts, storms and extreme weather events are increasingly likely above 1.5°C.
With the situation all but set to get worse, we must act now and fast to rectify and mitigate the damage to ourselves and future. The answer lies in shifting to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Achieving a balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of the present and future generations of humanity is crucial.
The seemingly litter things do matter. By placing refuse in bins and garbage collection sites instead of littering the roadside and gutters, or dumping waste and chemicals in water bodies, us as individuals show our care for the earth. By making use of the urinals and toilets instead of open defaecation, we play our part. Conserving water by using just the amount we need when needed, switching off light bulbs and appliances not in use, reusing and recycling what is possible, donating property that is still usable, and even planting trees and keeping a garden are all helpful to the cause and should be encouraged within families and the society.
As organisations such as the UN, UNESCO and green energy corporations continue working to tackle the global problems involving pollution, and steer governments towards making policies that ensure affordable, cleaner and healthier energy sources, let’s all chip our quota to make these a reality and preserve our home.
